Today would have been the 98th birthday of one of Jamaica’s most beloved prime ministers, Michael Manley.

Born on the 10th of December, 1924, he died in 1997.

The populist leader of the People’s National Party (PNP) served as the fourth prime minister of Jamaica. He led the country from 1972 to 1980 and again from 1989 to 1992.

He was the second son of Norman Washington Manley and artist Edna Manley. A student of Jamaica College, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.

As prime minister, he established a minimum wage for all workers and maternity leave for Jamaican women. He also established the National Housing Trust and proposed free education for all Jamaicans.
