The tropical climate of Jamaica makes it ideal for a plethora of fruits to thrive on the island. These include fruits such as the orange, guinep, papaya and banana, which can be found across the island.

Not only are these fruits quite tasty, but they also provide a number of health benefits. Today, in Our Today‘s series where we explore the health benefits that Jamaica-found fruits are able to provide, the focus is on the Naseberry.

The naseberry, also known as the sapodilla, chipota, chico or manilkara zapota is believed to have orginated in Yucatan, a Mexican state.

The fleshy fruit, sweet and enjoyed by many Jamaican natives, is also grown in India, Pakistan, Thailand and Malaysia.

Helps with Mental Health

Studies have shown that the naseberry has sedative properties and can help to relax stressed nerves. Tannin, the component responsible for these sedative properties, is also said to help with both anxiety and depression.

Builds Immunity

The naseberry is known to be a great immune booster, due to its high volume of Vitamin C. Eating the fruit helps to fend of sicknesses such as the common cold or flu.

Boosts Energy

When the body is low on energy, the naseberrry is a great go-to for an energy boost. This fruit contains beneficial carbohydrates which gives the body with the energy it needs to remain active.

Aids Digestion

Naseberry, like many other fruits, is a great source of fibre, which in turn helps with digestion. The high-fibre content promotes a healthy metabolism and helps the body to absorb important nutrients.

Improves skin

Vitamins C and E, found in the fruit, are able to improve the outer appearance of the skin and even fend off some skin conditions. Natural acids in the fruit also provide extra moisture and nourishment for dehydrated skin.

The naseberry has also been used as an ingredient in some beauty products.

The fruit also contains minerals that are able to protect the lungs and prevent lung infection or disease.
