Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with direct oversight for Skills and Digital Transformation, Senator Dana Morris Dixon says the HEART/TRUST NSTA is set to strengthen its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to respond to the changes in global demands.
Senator Morris Dixon who was speaking in the Upper House on Friday (July 15) during her contribution to the State of the Nation Debate said that: “this ministry will work with HEART/NSTA to develop and grow higher-level technical programmes that are underpinned by the needs of the local economy and industry insight.”
“The economic benefits of an improved TVET system are multiple. It will improve the standards of workforce training, produce high-quality graduates trained for immediate employment, create industry recognition of the availability of the talent pool, improve training and use of technology and increase productivity levels,”

She also noted this will equip students with the opportunity to achieve higher levels of training while receiving on-the-job training.

“I want to tell our young people again that the world has changed and skills are more and more important. Globally, there are shortages of skilled electricians and plumbers, for example. And it is important to note that these areas have changed as increasingly they involve technology. There is a global shortage of skilled construction workers and shortages of tech workers,” she said.
Senator Morris Dixon stressed that there is an increasing demand for skilled workers not only in traditional skilled areas but robotics, digital construction, renewable energy and efficiency technology and Information Technology Systems Administration.
