Amid recent incidents of political misconduct among some of the country’s political leaders on social media platforms, Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has called for a comprehensive review of the JLP social media policy and the governing code of conduct.

He made the call on Sunday, August 13, during a meeting of all constituency chairpersons and councillors/candidates at the Jamaica Conference Centre.

“In this era of rapid communication and digital interaction, it is imperative that we adapt and ensure our online behaviour aligns with our party’s core principles of unity, respect and inclusivity. Social media wields immense influence in shaping public opinion and by addressing issues like hate speech and divisive language, we aspire to foster productive and meaningful disclosure that serves the best interests of Jamaica,” the JLP leader said.

The JLP in a statement on Monday, August 14, said the directive aims to refine the guidance provided to party members and representatives regarding their online conduct and behaviour on various electronic media platforms.

The announcement of an overhaul to the party’s social media policy comes weeks after JLP member of parliament (MP) for St Thomas Eastern, Dr Michelle Charles, came under scrutiny for a video she posted on the popular social media Tik Tok, where she was seen stuffing an orange rag under a female constituent’s green dress.

President of the People National Party (PNP) Women Movement Patricia Duncan Sutherland denounced the behaviour and called for Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Deputy Prime Minister Horace Chang and Gender Minister Oliva Grange to condemn the MP’s actions.

Charles has since issued a public apology for her actions in the viral video.

The JLP’s public relations committee is set to lead the review of the party’s social media policy and code of conduct, with a focus on nurturing a culture of respect and dignity towards the Jamaican people while upholding the party’s principles and values.

“To facilitate the transition of these standards, the JLP will organize workshops designed to engage the party members and representatives. These workshops will provide a platform for a comprehensive understanding of the revised guidelines. The JLP is committed to nurturing a positive online environment that strengthens its connection with the Jamaican people,” the JLP said.

Members of the party will also be exposed to skills to navigate social media and contribute to public discourse in a positive way.
