With NFL quarterback Tom Brady capturing his seventh Super Bowl title just over a week ago, the debate has been on in earnest as to whether the American football legend is truly the greatest athlete of all time.

It’s a question that is most suited to insulated American debate, which tends to disregard the greatness of athletes from other countries. Instead the debate tends to focus on their own heroes like Michael Jordan, who now has one less championship in his sport – basketball – than Brady, and competitive swimmer Michael Phelps, who holds 23 Olympic gold medals.

But during a recent episode of the Brilliant Idiots podcast, hosted by broadcaster Charlamagne The God and comedian Andrew Schulz, the American duo acknowledged and showed reverence to another legend who might have a good argument for being considered the overall greatest of all time.

“The degree of difficulty of football and the violence associated with football, I don’t see how Tom Brady is not the greatest athlete of all time,” Charlamagne initially argued during the discussion between ‘Idiots’.

He however amended the comment to acknowledge that the GOAT label for Brady might have to be specific to team sports.

Latching on to this, Schultz made a profound argument with which few Jamaicans are likely to disagree.

“If you go into individual sports, the greatest athlete of all time is probably Usain Bolt,” Schulz said.

“If you really want to look at competing, not everybody has picked up a basketball, not everybody has picked up a football…. . Michael Phelps, a lot of people might say he is the greatest athlete of all time. Yeah, the greatest athlete who could take swimming classes. A lot of people can’t afford to take swimming classes. You have to be wealthy for swimming to be even be a hobby or you have to live near water.”

Schulz added: “Usain Bolt, everybody on this planet has run a hundred-metre straight. Every single person. So he is truly the fastest human being ever, because we know who is running fast.”

Bolt, who holds world records in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m, is an eight-time Olympic gold medalist and the fastest man of all time.

“This morning, I came to raise awareness of some things that have been happening in Jamaica lately. I don’t really like the direction things are going, especially about raping a nine-year-old and then killing her,” Popcaan said.
