INDECOM received 346 complaints during Q2

The Independent Commission on Investigations (INDECOM) is reporting that it has received 346 categories of complaints for the April to June quarter of this year.

The commission says this resulted from 267 incidents reported during the period.

The top five categories of complaints reported to INDECOM include assault which accounted for 114, discharge of firearm, 56, fatal shooting, 32, threat, 26, and shooting injury,15.

“There were four deaths in custody during the quarter. Incident reports were received for all parishes with Kingston and St. Andrew recording the highest with 74 complaints. Portland recorded the least with three reports,” the commission said.

In the meantime, INDECOM’s Legal Department completed and distributed 212 reports during the second quarter.

“There were no cases with recommendations for a charge during the period. Recommendations from fatal shooting incidents, where INDECOM Reports were completed, as well as rulings received from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions during the quarter listed in the quarterly report,” INDECOM added.

A member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) was also charged during the period for an incident investigated by INDECOM.

INDECOM’s Forensic Unit also responded to 74 incident scenes during the period.

INDECOM is the body charged with the responsibility of receiving and investigating complaints from the public regarding the actions of members of the security forces and correctional officers.
