The Integrity Commission (IC) has responded firmly to allegations from Member of Parliament Everald Warmington regarding the commission’s financial audits.
During a recent finance committee meeting, Warmington claimed there had been no audit of the IC’s financial affairs and demanded a report before the next financial year.
However, the IC in a statement today clarified that it has undergone annual audits for the past six years, conducted by an independent external auditor approved by the Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke.
The commission asserted that its audited financial statements have been consistently submitted and tabled in Parliament, including the latest report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, which was submitted on June 26, 2024, and tabled on July 9, 2024.
The IC also highlighted that a letter approving the auditor’s appointment for the 2023/2024 fiscal year was signed by Clarke on April 24, 2024.
Notably, the IC mentioned that Warmington, as a member of the Integrity Commission Parliament Oversight Committee, had recently met with the commission to review the annual report, which includes the audited financial statements.
The commission expressed concern over what it perceives as a lack of understanding among some legislators regarding the laws they are responsible for overseeing, suggesting that some may not adequately engage with the reports presented to Parliament.
