The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) generated $13.68 billion in revenue for the Government between April 2025 and March 16, 2026, while continuing to play a pivotal role in advancing the national priorities of safer roads and enhanced public service delivery.
This was disclosed by Minister of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications Daryl Vaz.
In his contribution to the 2026/27 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Vaz noted that as a key regulatory body, the ITA is mandated to administer the provisions of the Road Traffic Act through robust motor-vehicle driver management systems, supported by road-safety education and data-driven oversight.
“The Authority has continued to strengthen the regulatory framework governing motor-vehicle certification, ensuring that only roadworthy vehicles are permitted to operate on the nation’s roads,” he affirmed.
Vaz further highlighted a significant milestone achieved with the introduction of the e-Fitness system on July 21, 2025.
“This system has modernised the certification process through the digitisation of fitness certificates, eliminating the need for physical documents and enhancing efficiency, transparency, and regulatory compliance,” he stated.
Vaz said the initiative represents a critical component of the Authority’s broader digital transformation agenda.
According to data from the ITA, more than 400,000 digital certificates of fitness have been issued since the system’s launch.
Vaz said this outcome reflects strengthened compliance and improved operational efficiency, while bolstering public confidence in the regulatory framework.
Meanwhile, the Minister advised that the Authority has expanded its public education initiatives across schools, workplaces, and communities.
Key events held included 16 learner-driver education programmes and 105 road-safety-awareness engagements.
The Transport Minister emphasised that these initiatives are aligned with national policy objectives to reduce road fatalities.
“While road fatalities increased marginally by two per cent between 2024 and 2025, from 365 to 374, preliminary data for 2026 is encouraging, indicating a 32 per cent reduction in fatalities, to date, when compared to the corresponding period last year,” Vaz shared.
