J. Wray & Nephew Limited (JWN) has expressed disappointment over the incident that resulted in the closure of Crab Circle in Kingston.
Following the release of a viral video showing unsanitary practices taking place in the area, which prompted the Kingston and St Andrew Health Department to close the facility, JWN said it is disappointed in light of the significant investment it has made to rehabilitate the area.
“We wish to express our sincere disappointment regarding the unfortunate event that transpired, particularly in light of our significant investments made in the rehabilitation of the area in 2022,” the rum and spirits maker said in a statement to the media on Friday.
It continued, “The memorandum of understanding (MOU) that we signed with the Kingston & St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) at the beginning of the project clearly outlined the commitments of each organisation within their respective areas of competence. JWN has delivered on the areas agreed, which does not include infrastructure, therefore, all questions related to the infrastructure works ought properly to be directed to the municipality.”
“Despite this setback, we remain unwavering in our dedication to the welfare of all who depend on Crab Circle. We pledge to continue our close collaboration with the Kingston & St Andrew Municipal
J. Wray & Nephew Limited
Corporation to ensure the stringent maintenance of the highest health and hygiene standards and training is implemented.”
The driving force behind JWN’s involvement in the Crab Circle project was its belief in the importance of improving commercial spaces for vendors across Jamaica to enhance their livelihoods and better support their families, regardless of whether they sold alcohol.
