Jamaica continue dominance of 2024 Carifta Championships

Jamaica continued its dominance on Day 2 of the 2024 Carifta Track and Field Championships at the Kirani James Stadium in Grenada yesterday, March 31, copping 15 gold medals.

Among the Jamaican gold medallists were record breakers Robert Miller and Jevontae Smith. Miller clocked a new record of 52.19 seconds to win the Under 17 boys 400 metre hurdles. 

Teammate Francisco Williams was third in 53.19 seconds. Smith set a new record of 18.88 metres to win the U-17 boys’ shot put. Jamaica scored gold with Nastassia Fletcher, who took victory in the U-17 girls’ 400 metre hurdles final.

More Jamaican victories

Shamer Blake clocked 51.21 seconds to win the U-20 boys 400 metre hurdles ahead of teammate Princewell Martin, who was second in 51.34 seconds. Kaydeen Johnson defended her title in the U17 girls 3000 metre’s final with teammate, Ashara Frater taking the silver.

Kimeka Smith threw 13.68 metres to win the U’20 girls’ shot put. Rickoy Hunter leapt 7.48 metres on his final effort to land the U-20 boys long jump, while Chavez Penn registered 2.13 metres to win the U-20 boys’ high jump.

Jamaica won three of the four 4 x100 metre relays, also taking victory in the U-17 girls’ section in 45.36 seconds, while the U-17 boys won gold in 41.30.

The U-20 girls were also victorious in 43.63 seconds while the U-20 boys took silver in 40.55 behind Trinidad and Tobago in 40.45 seconds.

In a thrilling conclusion to the U-20 Boys’ Long Jump final at the 51st Carifta Games, Jamaica’s Rickoy Hunter delivered a breathtaking performance to snatch the gold medal in the closing moments of the morning session on Day 2.

Throughout the competition, Hunter had remained in third place, trailing behind the leading mark set by Bernard Kemp of The Bahamas. However, with his final attempt, Hunter unleashed a remarkable leap, soaring out to a distance of 7.48m.

Hunter’s last-minute heroics propelled him into the top spot, surpassing Kemp’s leading mark of 7.40m.
