Jamaica is significantly expanding its air bridge with Canada with the announcement that approximately 400,000 seats will be available to the destination from that North American source market for the 2026-2027 winter season.

The expanding air connectivity comes from the expansion of Air Canada, Sunwing and Porter Airlines, which will offer a new link from Hamilton, Ottawa and Toronto-Pearson to Montego Bay by the end of this year. The additional capacity complements the current flights of Air Transat, Flair, Caribbean Airlines and WestJet.

With this development, Jamaica is strengthening its position as the preferred Caribbean destination for Canadian travellers, offering more frequencies and direct services to the island’s two main terminals.

Growing confidence in Jamaica’s tourism product

Jamaican tourism authorities are viewing this expansion as a sign of confidence in their tourism product and airline partnerships, part of a broader strategy to diversify and strengthen air transport in source markets. “This offering aims to support traffic growth between both countries, positioning the Canadian market as the second most important for the Caribbean island, behind the United States, explains the Jamaica Tourist Board in a media statement.

For Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, “This expansion of air connectivity from Canada is a clear sign of confidence in Jamaica’s tourism product and in the strength of our partnerships with Air Canada, Sunwing, WestJet and now Porter Airlines.”

Local tourism authorities explained that the new direct flights from major Canadian airports to Jamaica’s two terminals offer travellers greater frequencies. Regional Tourism Director for Canada, Angella Bennett, comments, “The expansion of winter air service is based on Jamaica’s broader strategy to diversify and strengthen air transportation in its key source markets, reinforcing the destination’s resilience and its positioning in a competitive global tourism landscape.”

Reading Time: 3 minutesIn light of World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August), the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) is calling on countries across the Americas to strengthen protections for families against the growing digital marketing of breast-milk substitutes and other products that may undermine breastfeeding.

While breastfeeding remains one of the most effective interventions for protecting the health and development of infants and young children, the environment in which families make feeding decisions has changed dramatically. Personalised advertising on social media, influencers, algorithms, and artificial intelligence are creating new challenges to ensuring that parents and caregivers receive objective, evidence-based information.
