Jamaica has reaffirmed its commitment to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations to achieve sustainable agrifood systems on the island, the Caribbean and beyond.
The commitment was given yesterday at a bilateral meeting between Jamaica’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining Floyd Green and FAO Director-General Dr QU Dongyu, held on the margins of the World Food Forum 2025 and FAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations taking place at the organisation’s headquarters in Rome.
Dr Dongyu welcomed Minister Green and commended the alliance with Jamaica and the Caribbean countries, expressing the FAO’s equal commitment to achieving sustainable agrifood systems globally.
He also thanked the Minister, expressing his focus on Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), including in the Caribbean region, and commended Jamaica for its efforts to overcome developmental challenges.
In return, Minister Green thanked the Director-General, praising the successful outcome of the World Food Forum on FAO’s 80th Anniversary, emphasising Jamaica’s role in the Caribbean Small Island Developing States Investment Proposal under the FAO Hand-in-Hand Initiative.
On the country’s portfolio, he mentioned the high development impact of projects in general, providing examples in mariculture and aquaculture.
Finally, the Minister appreciated FAO’s renewed focus on SIDS under Dr QU’s leadership and announced that Jamaica would host the Caribbean Week of Agriculture next year.
