Almost a week after Jamaica recorded its highest coronavirus-related deaths to date, the country today (September 1) recorded yet another grim milestone.

The latest milestone comes as Jamaica on Tuesday recorded 31 COVID-19 related fatalities up from the previous high of 22 deaths recorded last Thursday (August 26).

The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in its clinical management summary, noted, however, that six of the deaths were previously listed as ‘under investigation’ and were recorded between the period August 23 – 30.

In the meantime, 351 new COVID-19 cases were recorded by health officials over the last 24 hours, bringing the national confirmed total to 68,482.

According to health ministry data, all 14 parishes confirmed new cases, with Kingston and St Andrew (96), St Catherine (52), St Thomas (34), Westmoreland (32) and St James (31) rounding out areas where infections were highest.

The positivity rate, which continues to be fuelled by the prevalence of highly transmissible Delta variant, now stands at 40.6 per cent.

At present, Jamaica is managing 18,103 active infections, while some 48,402 persons have fully recovered from the infectious disease.
