Jamaica’s Ricardo ‘Big 12’ Brown lost by a split decision in his three-round men’s super heavyweight 91 kilogrammes preliminary boxing bout against Satish Kumar of India at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Thursday (Wednesday night Jamaica time).

Brown lost the fight 4-1 as only Russian judge Yaroslav Renev favoured the Jamaican, awarding him scores of 10-9 for rounds two and three and scoring 10-9 for Kumar in round one.

Three of the other judges, Mariya Kavaklieva of Bulgaria, Miguel Anco Bobadilla of Peru and Muhammad Petra Pohan of Indonesia scored all three rounds 10-9 for Kumar, while Ugandan Stephen Aciga gave Kumar round one 10-8 and round two and three 10-9.

Brown was focused throughout the fight on landing a big punch on Kumar, who stayed out of reach, while quickly getting in a punch and then clinching when the boxers get close. Brown in his effort to land the big shots, swung widely several times throughout the bout.

CLASH OF HEADS

Kumar delivered the first telling punch of the bout when he landed a right to the jaw of Brown early in the fight. Brown, however, managed to step away from the power, to lessen the impact.

In round two, Brown landed a power shot to the jaw of Kumar, but with 1:30 minute left, Kumar responded with a heavy right to Brown and stepped back quickly from danger.

Towards the end of the round, Brown delivered three successive shots to the body of Kumar, before a clash of heads with 41 seconds left, opened a cut on Kumar, which was quickly and adequately dressed by his corner.

Kumar only did enough to see out the fight to the end in round three, as he had Brown chasing and still hunting the knockout blow.
