Prominent Jamaican businessman Elias Azan has died.

Azan, 65, who passed away yesterday (April 21) at the University Hospital of the West Indies, had reportedly contracted COVID-19 and succumbed to his the illness.

The director of operations at Bashco Trading Co. Ltd was also chairman of Munro College.

A statement posted on social media by Munro College read: “It is with a profound sense of loss that I advise you of the passing of Mr. Elias Azan, Chairman of Munro College. The board, administrators, staff, students, parents and alumni of Munro College mourn the passing of this exemplary Munronian. May his light perpetually shine.”

Up to Tuesday, Jamaica had reported 744 deaths from the COVID-19 and 44,337 confirmed infections.

There were 23,203 active cases, 299 persons hospitalised and 29 individuals in critical condition.
