Jamaica’s Levell, Thompson, Blake, Goule-Toppin through to semis at World Indoor Champs

Olympic and World Championship 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson, Ackeem Blake and Bryan Levell all safely advance to the Men’s 60 semi-finals, while Lamara Distin was 10th in the Women’s High jump final on the opening morning of the World Indoor Championship in Poland.

In the first final of the championship, Distin leapt 1.85m and finished in 10th spot. Ukraine’s world record holder Yaro Mahuchikh, won gold with 2.01m. Nicola Olyslagers of Australia, with 1.99m, won silver in a season’s best. Serbia’s Angelina Topic took the bronze with 1.99m.

Earlier, Levell got the ball rolling, winning Heat 3 in 6.53 and was the quickest of the Jamaicans. Thompson won Heat 5 in 6.56, and Blake won Heat 7 in 6.59. American Trayvon Bromell was the quickest, winning Heat 2 in 6.52.

The semi-finals are set for 2:16 pm Jamaican time with Levell in Heat 1, Thompson in Heat 2 alongside Bromell and Blake in Heat 3  and will face American champion Jordan Anthony and defending Indoor champion Jeremiah Azu of Britain.

Jamaica’s Reheem Hayles advanced to the semis of the Men’s 400m after finishing second in his heat in 46.66, won by American Chris Robinson in 46.34. Jamaica’s other entrant, Delano Kennedy, was third in Heat 3 in 47.02 and failed to advance.

His heat was won by Omar Elkhatib of Portugal in 46.56. Canada’s Chris Williams has the fastest time in the semis, clocking 45.51.

Veteran middle-distance runner Natoya Goue-Toppins advanced to the semi-final of the Women’s 800m, clocking a relaxed-looking 2:01.32. Pernilla Antonson of Norway won in a national record of 2:00.77.

Jamaica’s second entrant, Kelly-Ann Beckford, was fourth in her heat in 2:04.09 and failed to advance. The race was won by Nigist Getachew of Ethiopia in 2:02.89.

In the men’s 800m, Navasky Anderson finished third in heat 1 in 1:46.34 and squeezed into semi-final. The race was won by Peter Bol of Australia with 1:45.87, ahead of Allon Clay of Japan with 1:46.08.
