Here’s the list of celebratory events for Emancipation, Independence

Jamaicans participate in the Jamaica 60 Independence Grand Gala held on Saturday, August 6, at the National Stadium, Kingston.

Jamaica will soon be overtaken with a host of celebratory events showcasing the country’s proud heritage and vibrant culture as the country marks 185 years of emancipation and 61 years of Independence between August 1 and 6.

The island, along with other countries in the Caribbean, was forced into a period of slavery and extortion that led to many fighting for freedom from the European powers that dominated the region in the period before emancipation.

After years of rebellions and uprisings, Jamaicans broke into joyous celebrations on August 1, 1838, when the Emancipation Declaration was read, affirming their full freedom from slavery. Though a momentous occasion for the island, ex-slaves were still governed by the European empire, which dictated the country’s daily operations.

Determined to have full freedom and responsibility for the governance of the country, the freed slaves demanded independence, continuing their riots and rebellions. On August 5, 1962, their wish was finally granted, and Jamaica became independent of the British, forming its own currency, flag, and Government.

Now, these occasions are celebrated yearly as a reminder of our victorious fight for freedom. The celebrations also serve as a form of appreciation for those who fought for freedom and a reflection of how far we have come as a nation.

The Minister of Culture, Entertainment, Gender and Sport Olivia Grange announced a list of celebratory activities to mark the occasion in Parliament yesterday. Here they are:

  • The Governor General’s Independence Reception at Kings House on July 27
  • Independence Church Service at Waltham Park New Testament Church of God on July 30 at 10 am.
