The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is urging health officials, families, and communities throughout Jamaica to place a greater focus on mental health and suicide prevention following an increase in the number of suicides between December and January.
The JCF said Jamaica has seen a notable increase in the number of suicides with the majority of these tragic deaths being among older men.
According to JCF statistics, there were 27 reported suicides between November and January, a significant increase compared to previous years. Among the reported case of suicides for the period, 23 were men, with the majority being over the age of 40.
The JCF registered 14 suicides for the month of January compared to three in January 2022 and January 2021. While one suicide was recorded in January 2020.
The JCF data also revealed that 10 suicides were recorded in December 2022 compared to seven in December 2021 and three in December 2020.
The JCF said the recent increase in suicides is a cause for concern and encouraged families, non-governmental organisations and religious groups to play their part in preventing suicides by reaching out to loved ones who may be struggling and offering support and encouragement.
