Prolific sports administrator Jerome Waite has been appointed head coach of Wolmer’s Boys’ football programme, the Heroes Circle-based school announced today (June 7).

Wolmer’s principal Dwight Pennycooke, in making the announcement, showered Waite, an alum of the institution, with praise for his successes as both athlete and leader in the sporting arena.

“Waite has distinguished himself as a sportsman and coach of no mean repute, having won back-to-back titles in the [Jamaica] Premier League and in business-house and schoolboy football competitions,” noted Pennycooke in a memo to parents, students, staff and the Wolmer’s Old Boys fraternity.

“He has extensive experience in coaching football but has also been an athlete, track and field coach and a sports administrator,” the principal added.

At Wolmer’s, Waite will be looking to replicate his exploits with Charlie Smith High, which he led to multiple championship victories in the Manning Cup in 1988 and 1990. Charlie Smith also secured the holy trinity of schoolboy football supremacy, winning the Manning Cup (defeating Wolmer’s), Walker Cup and islandwide Olivier Shield trophies in 1995.

Wolmer’s last lifted the Manning Cup title in 1994, the same year it secured the Olivier Shield.

In top-flight, Jamaica Premier League action, Waite has led Arnett Gardens FC to four titles as recently as the 2016-2017 season.
