Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, has unveiled the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) latest Ministry Highlights document, detailing a comprehensive summary of the government’s achievements across various ministries since 2016.
Speaking during a JLP press conference Thursday on the new e-booklet, Johnson Smith emphasised that the document is more than just a summary—it’s a transparent reflection of commitments fulfilled by the JLP administration.
“We not only just remind you of what we said in 2016… If you go 2016, we started to work for you. We entered office and in 2020, we said that we were going to focus on certain things as we created a stronger future.”
The digital document is organised by ministry, making it easier for citizens to track specific sectors and about 150,000 copies have been printed and distributed.
She highlighted key national projects under the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC).
“MEGJC shares elements with you more about the largest road, highway development and port infrastructure expansion across the nation… expanding national water access, the social water programme, and what we’ve been doing in climate action. Environment is not just about building trees… and we have certainly done more,” she added.
The booklet, Johnson Smith further highlights, speaks about how the government has been empowering MSMEs, transforming urban centres, advancing the digital economy and the systematic land titling programme.
Under the Office of the Prime Minister, ten summarised initiatives have also been highlighted surrounding what the government has performed. “It also, of course, goes into the Office of the Prime Minister… housing is there, green energy is there, more urban renewal and public sector digitisation,” she said
The government reported that between 2016 and 2025, through the work of the Office of the Prime Minister, the National Housing Trust (NHT) created over 67,000 new mortgages, initiated more than 31,000 housing starts, and completed over 21,000 homes.
Johnson Smith reminded the public of cultural and creative sector investments to make Jamaica a better place. “There are so many things which you may have either forgotten or not recognised… not only the work that has been done in sports and grassroots youth development, but also the well-being for creatives,” she said.
This includes efforts to establish entertainment zones and conduct environmental impact assessments for creative development. “All of the preparatory work that is going to help us move into the next chapter of harnessing our creative economy,” she explained.
Johnson Smith further highlighted the government’s efforts to support the cultural and religious communities. “We have provided additional support for Coral Gardens survivors and economic empowerment programmes for cultural and religious communities, such as the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the Maroons and the various communities such as the Accompong,” she added.
She encouraged Jamaicans to explore and share the booklet, noting that this is the government’s “next chapter of our achievements.”
“Many people want to think of the Jamaica Labour Party’s achievements in a particular box… but it is so rich and wide and life-impacting,” she said
