Fresh from its election victory at the national polls last Wednesday, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) summoned all its losing candidates to party headquarters at Belmont Road, New Kingston, on Sunday (September 7) for urgent reassessment.
The meeting comes against the background of the governing party’s beginning the work to strengthen and deepen its political organisation to sustain its third term and beyond.
Yesterday, party leader Prime Minister Andrew Holness had a debriefing with all his ‘hardworking candidates’, who received minority votes in their respective constituencies.

According to Holness, “these candidates gave their all, and I am deeply proud of their valiant effort, which contributed to our victory”.
“Each candidate has committed to continue their work for the party and the people, and we will work together to deliver the best representation for Jamaica,” he added.
The JLP received the majority of votes in 35 constituencies while the People’s National Party (PNP) polled the most votes in the other 28 constituencies, following the final counting of ballots on Sunday. The overall preliminary voter turnout is 39.5 per cent, according to the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ).
Losing PNP candidates in two constituencies are sure to go to court to seek to overturn the results. They are Steve McGregor in Central Kingston, who was defeated by incumbent Donovan Williams and Paul Buchanan, who lost to Holness in West Central St Andrew.
