Manchester City have secured the future of defender Josko Gvardiol, who has agreed a new contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2031.

The 24-year-old’s previous deal was due to run until 2028, but the extension has grown interest from European heavyweights, including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Reports had suggested talks between City and Gvardiol were progressing smoothly in recent weeks, and those discussions have now resulted in a long term agreement. Gvardiol is currently away with Croatia, preparing for the World Cup, where he could even face teammates when they meet England in their opening match. The defender enjoyed a standout first season at City, collecting the club’s player of the season award for 2024–25.

However, his second year was interrupted after he suffered a broken leg in January, limiting him to 25 appearances across all competitions. He returned to action in May, featuring briefly against Crystal Palace and again in the final league game against Aston Villa, as he worked his way back to full fitness. Capable of operating at centre back or left back, Gvardiol remains a key part of Pep Guardiola’s plans moving forward as City lock in one of their defensive mainstays for the long term.
