Kamla Persad-Bissessar is back as prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago after her opposition United National Congress (UNC) defeated the ruling People’s National Party (PNM) in Monday’s general election.

Prime Minister Stuart Young conceded defeat and vowed to “fight for Trinidad and Tobago” as his party failed in its bid to secure a third term in government.

The country awaits the results from the official count.

The 73-year-old Persad-Bissessar told cheering supporters Monday nightthat the country now has a prime minister who “cares, a prime minister who loves you” and will “fight so that we will win together”.

She told supporters they were the real bosses and that “we are here to serve the people”.

She said that everybody won with the UNC victory and that the people will never have a leader who “loves you like I do”.
