Many-times winner Kingston College (KC) and defending champion Mona High were joined by Charlie Smith High and St Catherine High in the semi-final of the Walker Cup following Monday’s quarter-final games.
KC, still smarting from being eliminated from the Manning Cup, gained a level of revenge on Calabar High, beating them 2-1. In the Manning Cup group decider, KC needed to beat Calabar to keep their title hopes alive, but could only draw 2-2 and were eliminated.
On Monday, the Famed Purples exacted revenge and eliminated their fierce rival with goals by Rohan Brown (8th) and Shareef Ricketts (16th). Payton Larmond (14th) had pulled Calabar level.
KC maintained their search for a record 10th title, having last won in 2016, while Calabar’s search for a football title continues as they last won the Walker Cup in 2007 and the Manning Cup two years earlier in 2005.
Meanwhile, champions Mona turned back the 2018 champion Hydel High 3-2 in a pulsating game. Mona played with 10 men from the first half, but goals by Joenaldo Payne (4th), Franklyn Mitchum (71st) and Sean Leighton (74th) put Mona in control.
However, Ackeem Ewan (77th) pulled one back for Hydel, setting the stage for an epic grand finale. But Mona held firm.
At the final whistle, referee Shandaye Edwards was verbally abused, and he flashed his red card to two Hydel players, Dayquan Denton and Kyle Chen.
Over at the Ashenheim Stadium, Charlie Smith High demolished fierce rivals Tivoli Gardens High 6-1, and St Catherine mauled Vauxhall High 5-2 in two high-scoring games involving 14 goals.
The semifinals will be played on Wednesday, with Mona High taking on Charlie Smith and KC tackling St Catherine High. The Walker Cup final is set for Friday as the curtain raiser to the Manning Cup final.
