KC surged to big lead while Edwin Allen holds slim lead after day two action at Champs

Defending champion Kingston College (KC) raced to an 18-point lead while Edwin Allen girls held a slim seven-point advantage at the end of day two at the ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

After eight of the 42 finals, KC are on top with 47 points and holds an 18-point lead over Jamaica College on 29 points. Excelsior High is on 23 points. St Jago High, Calabar High and Wolmer’s Boys are all on 22 points.

In nine of the 46 finals in the girls’ section, Edwin Allen are on 56 points ahead of Holmwood Technical on 49 points with St Jago High third on 32 points. Hydel High are fourth on 31 points with Vere Technical in fifth on 19 points.

There were some splendid performances, stunning record runs and an unusual delayed false start disqualification after the race was run that highlighted the second-day action.

Sabrina Dockery clocked a splendid 11.08 (0.8 m/s) to win the Girls’ Class One 100m which makes her the fifth-fastest Jamaican junior. Doniella Lewis of Holmwood Technical was second in 11.43 and Renecia Edwards of Edwin Allen third with 11.54.

The expected charge towards the boys’ Class One 100m record of 9.99 never materialized as Gary Card of Wolmer’s Boys won in 10.28 (+0.5) ahead of Tyrece Foreman of St George’s College in 10.29 and Malike Nugent of Excelsior High in 10.35.

Card had run 10.06 in the semi-finals and fans were looking for that elusive sub-10 clocking at Champs.

But the record came in the lower class as Kai Kelly of JC won the Class Three 100m in a record 10.60. Second-placed Jevaney Findlay of St Jago with 10.67, was also below the previous mark of 10.69 held by JC’s Christopher Scott since 2019.

Michael Graham of Excelsior won the Class Two 100m in 10.46 ahead of Jaydon Collins of Holmwood Technical and Calabar’s Bryon Walker in third with 10.65.

Shanoya Douglas sped to 11.30 to win the girls’ Class Two 100m while Shannia Campbell of St Jago took Class Three in 11.62. Adalia Simpson of Holmwood Technical captured the Class Four in 12.13.

Kingston College’s Julius Itubo of Kenya smashed the Class Three 1500m record running a splendid 4:05.15 and was seven seconds below the previous record of 4:12.50 held by Tavaughn Martin since 2019. Jevaughn Tomblin of Bellefield High was second in 4:18.30 with Dejaun Gray of STETHS third in 4:23.68.

KC’s Brian Kiprop won the much-anticipated Class One 1500m clash with fellow Kenya Ryan Achau of St Jago High. Kiprop successfully defended his title, winning in a personal best of 3:55.24.

Achau who started like a house on fire, faded badly into fourth in 4:00.01. Joel Morgan of Edwin Allen was second in his personal best of 3:56.12 while Raheen Palmer of Alphansus Davis finished third in 3:58.42.

Taifa Gowe of Hydel High took the girls’ Class One 1500m in 4:37.34 and held off Cindy Rose of Holmwood Technical who was second in 4:38.22. Ashara Frater of Vere Technical grabbed third spot with 4:38.56.

Alikay Reynolds of Alphansus Davis took the Class Two 1500m in 4:41.29 ahead of Cindy Rose’s sister Jovi Rose who was second in 4:42.71. Denique Palmer of Edwin Allen captured the Class Three 1500m in  4:44.44 ahead of Alexia Palmer of Sydney Pagon High in 4:46.89.

Kingston College won the first final of Champs courtesy of Amani Phillips who leapt 7.15m for gold ahead of Rodeeki Walters of STETHS with 7.09m. Michel Graham of Excelsior High snatched third with 7.02m.

Season-leader Omarian Miller of KC with 7.37m, could only muster 6.84m and was fourth. But it was 14 big points for KC although they wanted 16 points.

Calabar’s Richard Green was fifth with 6.75m and four valuable points given that Jamaica College picked up no point.

Clarendon College, Jamela Young took the first girls’ final capturing the Class Two Shot Put with a throw of 13.65m ahead of Bethany Thomas of Wolmer’s with 13.19m. Jade Francis of Immaculate Conception was third with 13.03m.

Earlier in the 400m semis, KC qualified four athletes to the finals compared to Calabar’s three and JC’s one.

But it was Williams Knibb’s Jabari Matheson who entered the Class One final with the fastest time of 46.54. KC’s Tajh-Marques White toyed with his opponents, turning for home in fifth and easing past everyone effortlessly in 46.70. He’s expected to go much faster in the final.

Same can be said of defending champion Marcinho Rose of KC who was easy in winning his semis in 46.84 with a whole heap in the tank.

JC has one runner in the final in Makaelan Woods of Trinidad and Tobago who sneaked in the final with 47.03. Title contender Calabar will have no competitor in Class One final as both Keano Charles (47.39) and Junior Gallimore (47.40) failed in their attempts.

In Class Two, KC secured two finalists with Jason Pitter quickest with 47.91 and Jordan Rehedul sneaking in with 49.03, ahead of Calabar’s Micah Willis who was ninth best with 49.46.

But the boys from Red Hills Road will be represented by Diwayne Sharpe who clocked 48.82 for the sixth-best time.

In Class Three, Calabar has two runners in Rajeve Allison (51.36) and Justin McKoy (51.23) as both KC and JC failed to get a runner in the final. Rusea’s High’s Tiene Barrett sped to an impressive 49.98 seconds to be fastest into the final.

On the girls’ side, Holmwood Technical secured maximum six runners to the 400m final compared to Hydel’s five and Edwin Allen’s three.

In Class One, Abigail Campbell of Hydel enters the final with the fastest time of 53.30 and her teammate Sasha-Shaunta Hemmings 54.50 as are the Holmwood pair of Abrina Wright (54.24) and Kristen Herbert (54.39). Edwin Allen’s Kellyann Carr has the second-best time of 53.94.

In Class Two, the Hydel pair of Nastassia Fletcher (53.08) and Sashana Johnson (53.97) are the two quickest into the final. Holmwood will be represented by Maddison Campbell (55.12) and Britannaia Bailey (55.83).  Marria Crossfield (55.81) of Edwin Allen is the lone representative.

Holmwood will be well represented by Ashley Wynter (57.37) and Tracey-Ann Evans (55.55) as will Khalila Lewis Satchwell (56.65) of Edwin. Hydel will have Shaneil Henry (57.35).

Shameika McLean of Foga Road High enters with the fastest time of 54.79 and will take some catching.
