The capital city of Kingston Jamaica was elected the ‘World Best Creative Destination’ during the ninth Creative Tourism Awards.
The award aims to reward companies, projects, and destinations that foster creative tourism in all its forms. The main criteria is the use of creativity to design unique experiences and to create an ecosystem at a local scape.
Kingston Creative, a non-profit organisation in Jamaica made the application for the capital city to be recognised for its ongoing work to renovate the downtown Kingston area, bringing back life to the space. For months, the non-profit has been hosting events that engage creatives in the art, music and cultural space, sharing their creations with both tourists and locals.
“Kingston Creative seizes the opportunity to enhance its tourist model and to convert it into a lever of sustainable development, based on inclusiveness, communities’ empowerment, and intangible heritage recovery,” said Caroline Couret, director of the Creative Tourism Network in a release.
The award was delivered to Edmund Bartlett, the minister of tourism for Jamaica.
Commenting on the prestigious award, Andrea Dempster-Chung, the founder of Kingston Creative said in a post on Twitter: “It’s such an honor for Kingston to win the @CreativTourism award for Best Creative Destination 2023. The city of Kingston was among 152 applications from 28 countries and came out on top to secure the victory.
