The Ministry of Labour and Social Security will have an emergency meeting with workers of the National Water Commission (NWC) amid reports that workers intend to strike in relation to concerns about the new compensation review.
Reports are that the workers are dissatisfied with the outcome of a meeting with Finance Minister Nigel Clarke about the ongoing compensation review. To voice their frustration, workers issued a 72-hour strike notice served to the NWC on Sunday, which advised of disruptions come July 11.
In response, the Labour Ministry indicated they invited the management of the NWC and union representatives to a conciliatory meeting to be held today (July 10) at the ministry’s offices this afternoon.
The controversial public-sector compensation review has made several headlines since its implementation, with several members of the sector taking industrial action to demand fair wages and better working conditions.
The exercise, implemented in April 2022, is intended to overhaul the structure of salaries and other emoluments in the public service to make it more equitable. The review promises to provide workers with a 20 per cent salary increase over three fiscal years.
