Americans are living longer and according to a report by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC), life expectancy in the United States is now 79 years old.

Men are expected to reach an average of 75.8 years, while women have a life expectancy of 81.4 years.

Heart disease and cancer are still the leading causes of death, with more Americans now committing suicide.

Death rates continue to fall after the COVID-19 pandemic. There are still too many Americans dying due to drug overdoses.

Of particular note is the death rate for black people, which is 1.3 times the overall rate.

The U.S. hit a record low number of deaths in 2025, with under 3.1 million people dying.

The U.S. Government must pay attention to more Americans now living longer and improving their longevity. Preparations must be made for an ageing population, and adequate resources must be set aside.

Today, Americans celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary since it won independence from Britain. Today, Americans’ lifespan has doubled since 1776.

Despite America making progress with life expectancy, it still lags behind its peers, where the average is 82.7 years, about 3.7 years longer than in the U.S.

“We should celebrate. It’s very encouraging to see that mortality is declining and life expectancy is increasing in the U.S.. But we still see very high mortality from drugs, very high mortality from suicide, infant mortality remains high and maternal mortality remains high.

“So as we celebrate, we still have a lot of work ahead,hfl5“ said Ali Mokdad, an epidemiologist at the University of Washington.
