American rapper Lil Nas X has scored first-ever No. 1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, as viral (and controversial) hit single Montero (Call Me By Your Name) reigns supreme as the top song in the United States.

According to Billboard, in an article on Tuesday (April 6), Montero—an ode to Lil Nas X’s given birth name—soared with 46.9 million digital streams and 21,000 download sales in the US alone for the week ending April 1.

“It also attracted 1.1 million radio airplay audience impressions in the week ending April 4,” Billboard explained, citing MRC music sales data.

The single, buoyed by a ranchy and sexually liberated music video, earned Lil Nas X his second number one effort, following the 2019 record-smashing breakout hit Old Town Road.

Last week’s best performer, Peaches by Justin Bieber featuring Giveon and Daniel Caesar, sits at number two. Silk Sonic’s retro-styled lovers’ anthem Leave The Door Open remains at number three.

Rounding out the top five are fomer chart toppers Up from Cardi B and Olivia Rodrigo’s Drivers License.
