In an exclusive interview with Our Today, renowned financial industry leader and CEO of PROVEN Wealth, Luwanna Williams, opens up about her journey, milestones, and valuable insights gained throughout her career.

Williams’ rise to the top of the financial sector in Jamaica serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals seeking to make their mark in a rapidly evolving industry.

From her early days at St Jago High School, Williams displayed an aptitude for math and business subjects. Encouraged by her father, who worked in finance, she pursued a B.Sc. in Banking and Finance at the University of the West Indies, Mona. After graduation, she joined the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), where she gained invaluable experience in financial regulation and supervision.

“I credit this as the best start for me, as it was because of my time there [that] I was able to easily transition into the private sector and into the area of risk management. Having held multiple roles at the JN Group, including at JN Fund Managers, I developed a passion for helping clients achieve their financial goals and delivering the best-in-class service they deserve,” she shared with Our Today.

However, she noted that being promoted to President and CEO of PROVEN Wealth – Region 2, with responsibilities for Jamaica and the Bahamas, is the high point of her career and presents an unmatched opportunity to develop her skills and team.

Williams shared that her position as CEO affords her a challenge, one she will not shy away from. She also shared that her new position enables her to contribute to the company’s legacy and help shape its strategy for the future.

Acknowledging the significance of her new role, she emphasized the importance of effective communication, collaboration, and understanding the company’s strengths and challenges. Williams also noted that she remains grateful for her supportive team, mentors, and the opportunity to shape the company’s future.

“Finance has the power to transform lives and create opportunities. Witnessing how sound financial planning can positively impact individuals and businesses inspired me to pursue a career in this field. I wanted to be part of an industry that helps people achieve their financial goals and secure their future,” said the CEO.

Throughout her career, Williams has achieved numerous milestones and tackled significant challenges. One standout accomplishment was her instrumental role in supporting Wigton Windfarm to refinance approximately U$50 million in debt, which laid the groundwork for the company’s successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 2019.

“This was an important precursor to the company going public via its very successful and oversubscribed Initial Public Offer (IPO) in 2019. I remember the rush I felt when we won that bid and an even greater sense of satisfaction when we completed the raise. That feeling made me certain that I was in the right field,” she told Our Today.

Reflecting on her journey, Williams noted that adaptability and continuous learning are crucial in the evolving industry of Finance. She further noted that staying informed about market trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies is essential for success.

Additionally, building strong relationships based on trust and integrity is a key factor that she believes has contributed to her achievements.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is also a priority for the CEO.

Williams shared with Our Today that she prioritizes self-care through regular workouts and enjoys traveling to new destinations, which invigorates her spirit.

“I love working out. I’m sure my trainer will smile when he sees this, but it does make me feel [on] top of my game. I also love to travel, exploring new destinations, trying exciting foods, and meeting new people make me feel alive.

“Professionally, I set boundaries and delegate responsibilities when necessary. The power of effective time management and staying organised to ensure that both personal and professional commitments are met are also key to this balance,” she shared.

To aspiring entrepreneurs entering the industry, Williams encourages them to never stop learning, strive for excellence, seek out mentors and industry experts, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and prioritize the needs and success of clients and teams.
