Popular fast-food eatery McDonald’s is getting cooked on social media as persons across the United Kingdom accused the company of cultural appropriation for its ‘jerk chicken’ sandwich.
The new sandwich, costing £4.39, features two crispy Chicken Selects topped with a spicy jerk sauce, bacon, pepper jack cheese, onion and lettuce in a sourdough bun.
According to the McDonald’s website, the burger’s jerk sauce contains tomato paste, Habanero chilli puree, caramelised sugar syrup, spices, garlic, ginger and basil.
The sandwich, which is included in McDonald’s recently released festive menu in the UK, has garnered mixed reactions from British foodies.
On on end of the spectrum are those who praised McDonald’s and the sandwich, complimenting the restaurant for its unique and flavourful taste.
Those so offended claim the meal tastes nothing like jerk, especially when the concept—invented in, perfected and exported by Jamaica— involves plenty of spices and local scotch bonnet pepper.

On both Twitter and Facebook, McDonald’s UK was caught in the middle of a heated debate as Britons weighed in on whether the company attempted to profit from Jamaican culture.
As McDonald’s left the island in the late 1990s, I, for one, am curious about the new jerk chicken sandwich…does it deserve its fresh infamy?
The chain’s festive menu, also features a double Big Mac and a Celebrations McFlurry.
In a statement to UK media, a McDonald’s spokesperson explained that the burger’s distinction as jerk may be overselling its composition.
“Our Jerk Chicken Sandwich uses jerk seasoning in its spicy sauce. In the product description, we make it clear that the sauce is the jerk component of the sandwich,” the spokesperson told Daily Mail.
