McLeod and Pinnock advance to men’s long jump final, Gayle misses out

Jamaicans Carey McLeod and Wayne Pinnock both advanced to the men’s long jump final after successfully navigating the qualification rounds at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Sunday (August 4).

Former World Champion Tajay Gayle missed the finals as he couldn’t attain the qualification requirements after three attempts.

McLeod leapt to a distance of 7.90 metres to book a final spot as one of four provisional Group A contestants—Mattia Furlani (8.01m), Jacob Fincham-Dukes (7.96m) and Simon Batz (7.90m).

Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou, the event favourite and defending Olympic champion seeking the historic back-to-back double, was the only automatic qualifier with an 8.32m jump.

Pinnock secured his provisional qualification spot with a 7.96m effort as one of seven Group B contestants—Jinan Wang (8.12m), Simon Ehammer (8.09m), Filip Pravdica (8.04m), Mingkun Zhang (7.92m) and Arnovis Dalmero (7.92m).

Czechia’s Radek Juska claimed the lone automatic qualification in 8.15m.
