Lionel Messi scored his 643rd goal in a Barcelona jersey today (December 19), matching Brazil legend Pele for most goals for a single team.

As the greatest goalscorer for a single team, Pele no longer stands alone.

Today, another South American living legend, Lionel Messi, equalled Pele’s record of 643 goals for a single club after scoring for Barcelona in a 2-2 draw with Valencia.

The Argentina forward headed in his milestone goal just before half-time and just after missing a penalty, to cancel out Mouctar Diakhaby’s 29th-minute opener.

Messi went close with several late efforts but Ronald Koeman’s side was unable to go ahead and the six-time Ballon d’Or winner had to settle for matching rather than surpassing Pele’s Santos mark for now.

With the draw, Barcelona are in an unfamiliar fifth in the top-flight Spanish LaLiga table and can still be passed by sixth-placed Sevilla who have two games in hand on the Catalan giants.
