This has got to be the best match of the season to date, anywhere in top-class football.
The Champions League quarter- final clash, second-leg between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid was a feast of fantastic end-to- end football which saw stunning goals.
Yet again, the German outfit Bayern Munich demonstrated why, under its coach Vincent Kompany, it is the in-form team in Europe.
Already 12 points ahead in the Bundesliga, Bayern have lost only one of their last 28 Champions League games at their home ground, Allianz Arena.
Real Madrid struck first in just 45 seconds, with Arda Guler latching on to a horrible pass by Bayern goalie Manuel Neuer, trying to play the ball out of his box.
Guler curled the ball from outside the box into an empty net.
A silence descended over the Allianz Arena. What Bayern fans just saw was bizarre. It looked like it would be a hard night for the German team, pegged back and losing its goal advantage in the first minute of the game.
Steady heads prevailed, and Aleksander Pavlov equalised with a header from a corner.
Real Madrid regained the lead with a wonderful free kick from the young Turk, Arda Guler, bending the ball around the wall, giving Manuel Neuer no chance to stop this “wunder” strike. His two goals in the first half were pure class.
Former Spurs striker Harry Kane, a clinical killer in the box, equalised, his 50th goal this season and the 12th of this Champions League campaign. Kane has been tremendous at Bayern and now has to be recognised as one of the best strikers in world football.
Not to be outdone the Frenchman Mbappe scored in the 42nd minute.
At half-time, it was anyone’s guess who would come out top dog. It was a scintillating 45 minutes that produced five goals.
The former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold played well in this match, and his passing is still a delight to behold.
Mbappe turned it on in the second half and was unlucky not to score two more goals.
Michael Olise cut inside twice to have two shots on target that tested the Real Madrid keeper, as defenders backed off from him.
Central midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was reckless all night and got himself sent off just when Real Madrid needed to press ahead and continue to pile on the pressure.
Diaz scored a blinder for Bayern with the momentum swinging in the home side’s favour.
As the match entered its last moments, Oilse got his just reward with a beautiful goal that had the home fans jumping out of their seats with Kompany showing his evident delight.
What a night for Bayern Munich, beating Real Madrid 4-3 and 6-4 on aggregate across the tie.
After this epic match, Vincent Kompany said: ‘It was a very emotional game. We had lots of possession and always had the feeling we could score. But Real Madrid are Real Madrid. They are always a threat
“The boys were mentally strong today to recover from setbacks. The fans helped us as well. We stayed calm and always felt that our moment would come. You earn these moments over the course of the season by working for them repeatedly.
“What was important for me was that the players deserved to go out there today without fear. You can’t just say that, you also have to show it. And they did that. Whether we win or lose- in the end it often comes down to small details. What mattered to me was that after the match we weren’t standing there asking ourselves: what was that today? But instead that we gave everything.”
