MoBay United back on top in JPL as Arnett clip Portmore in marquee match-up

Montego Bay United returned to the top of the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League while Arnett Gardens dispatched previous leader Portmore United in the marquee match of the round.

In the curtain raiser at the Ferdi Neita Park in Portmore, St James-based Montego Bay United trounced Racing United 4-0 and jumped to the top of the league with 20 points.

Brian Brown opened the scoring in the 36th minute before Shaniel Thomas doubled the advantage in minute 41. Two late goals in stoppage time put the icing on the cake as Tyrone Harrison (90+1) and Johann Weatherly (90+4) completed the rout. The promoted Racing United of Caymanas Park, St Catherine, remained in 12th spot on eight points and just above the relegation zone.

In the feature encounter at Ferdi Neita Park, Arnett Gardens continued their push towards the top beating Portmore United 1-0 with a late strike by former Portmore player Chavany Willis in the 90+2 minute. The “Junglists” moved into fourth spot on 18 points from nine games, just behind Portmore United in third with 19 points from 10 games.

At the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Clarendon, home team Vere Phoenix United and Tivoli Gardens battled to a 2-2 draw.

Lennox Russell opened the scoring for Tivoli Gardens in the 18th minute before Mathew Woo Ling pulled Vere levelled in minute 30. Mona High School’s Denzel Mckenzie then gave Vere the lead in the 79th minute making it 2-1 but Quewayne Hudson earned a share of the points for Tivoli Garden with a very late strike in the 90+5.

Vere United are in eighth spot with nine points while Tivoli Gardens are struggling in 13th spot with seven points.

Caribbean Club finalist Cavalier SC and Harbour View FC played to a tame 0-0 draw at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium. Cavalier stayed in sixth spot on 16 points and Harbour View are five points adrift in seventh spot on 11 points.

Meanwhile, home team Waterhouse climbed into second spot on 20 points following their 2-0 win over a Humble Lion team down in 11th position with eight points. An own goal in the 70th minute sent Waterhouse on their way and Leonardo Jibbison sealed the victory in the 76th minute.

Molynes United registered a rare win beating Dunbeholden 2-0 with goals from Carlos Cooper (21st) and Jowell Powell (30th) but remained firmly at the bottom of the league in 14th spot on seven points. Dunbeholden are 10th on nine points.

Chapleton Maroons held the powerful aggregation of Mount Pleasant to a 1-1 draw. Damari Deacon gave Chapelton a 49th-minute lead but Raheem Edwards pulled Mount Pleasant levelled in the 90+4 minute. Mount Pleasant slipped to fifth spot on 15 points while Chapelton are ninth on nine points.
