More women are travelling solo: safety and scams are among their top concerns at new destinations
- Customer service, transparency, and real-time travel information are now among the key features women travelling alone expect in order to feel virtually supported throughout their journeys.
- As the number of women travelling continues to grow, digital ground transportation platforms are incorporating new features that help reduce uncertainty and provide greater confidence while travelling.
Women’s travel today is shaped by three key trends: the continued growth of female travellers, increasing concerns about safety during ground transportation, and a greater emphasis on making informed travel decisions. In this context, technology is transforming the travel experience by providing greater visibility, access to information, and support when navigating unfamiliar destinations.
Jamaica continues to consolidate its position as one of the Caribbean’s most important tourism destinations. The latest available visitor profile data from the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) highlights the relevance of female travellers within key international markets. In 2024, women represented 54.7% of visitors from Canada, one of Jamaica’s leading source markets, with 218,622 female travellers compared to 181,211 male travellers. The data also shows that Canadian visitors primarily stayed in tourist areas such as Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril.
Mozio, a global ground transportation booking platform, surveyed 1,006 international travellers (49% women) to better understand what causes the most anxiety after arriving at their destination. The report found that 34% of women are concerned about their personal safety, while 44% said they worry about becoming victims of scams. In addition, 16% reported having experienced a panic attack while travelling, demonstrating that travel-related stress can also have physical consequences.
These concerns are well founded. According to UN Women, women have become one of the main drivers of growth in the global tourism industry. More women are travelling alone for leisure, education, international events, and business, increasing the need to carefully plan every stage of their journey. Beyond flights and accommodations, travellers now expect ground transportation to be simple, reliable, efficient, and secure.
Among the main concerns for female travellers are:
- Not knowing where their driver or pick-up point is located.
- Language barriers when communicating with drivers.
- Navigating unfamiliar or confusing airports.
- Arriving without mobile service or internet access.
- Concerns about personal safety.
- Difficulty making payments.
Technology as an ally for women to travel with greater confidence
In response to these challenges, Mozio experts explain that digital mobility platforms have evolved to help women travelling alone feel more confident and less anxious throughout their journeys. Today, travellers can compare transportation options, review schedules and fares in advance, confirm reservations, manage itinerary changes in real time, access driver information, and contact customer support whenever needed. These features help reduce uncertainty and provide greater peace of mind, particularly when travelling in unfamiliar destinations.
Technology is transforming the transportation experience by giving travellers access to essential information before their journey even begins. At Mozio, we continuously analyse how digital mobility platforms are evolving to meet the expectations of today’s female travellers. It’s no longer just about booking a ride from the airport to the hotel. Travellers are looking for tools that help them plan all of their transportation needs throughout their trip while providing secure access, transparency, and the information they need to make confident, informed decisions.”, said Nicole Kerr, CEO at Mozio.
The continued growth of women’s travel is driving this transformation, particularly when travellers arrive in new destinations or need transportation late at night or in the early morning. According to Mozio, the combination of efficiency, transparency, and reliability is what ultimately builds trust and encourages travellers to choose the same service again because it consistently meets their expectations.
Travelling alone no longer means travelling without support
As more women travel for leisure, business, and education, they are increasingly looking for mobility platforms that offer confidence, transparency, ease of use, and dependable support throughout every stage of the travel experience.
With a network of more than 3,000 transportation providers across over 180 countries, Mozio has observed how ground transportation has become an important ally for travellers seeking greater peace of mind, particularly women travelling alone. Having access to verified information, understanding the details of a service before departure, and maintaining communication throughout the journey provide an additional layer of confidence that has become an expectation for thousands of travellers around the world.
“One of our greatest commitments to women travellers is helping them feel safe throughout their journey. Before any transportation provider joins the Mozio platform, we carefully assess each company to help ensure it is a legitimate business that meets our operational standards, including appropriate licensing and insurance where required. We then continuously monitor supplier performance to ensure those standards are maintained. Providers that fail to meet our quality or ethical requirements are removed from the platform, helping travellers book with greater confidence every time”, added Kerr.
Finally, Mozio experts point out that booking transportation before arriving at a destination helps travellers avoid long lines, reduce waiting times, overcome language barriers, and know the cost of their ride in advance, all factors that contribute to a smoother, more predictable travel experience.
“Today’s travellers want every trip to be a memorable experience. “That’s why at Mozio we encourage travellers to book transportation in advance, choose services that provide transparent information, and compare different transportation options before arriving at their destination. Whether travelling to a new city or a country with high visitor traffic, technology can help travellers know what to expect before, during, and after every ride”, Kerr concluded.
