In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which left many families without safe shelter, Member of Parliament of Hanover Western Heatha Miller Bennett has launched the ‘Help Me Fix My Roof’ initiative, a community rebuilding effort designed to provide direct support to affected residents.

The initiative allows individuals, corporate partners, and diaspora donors to purchase building material packages at local hardware stores and have them delivered directly to families in need.

The packages available are the plywood repair kit (J$64,000), zinc roof patch-up kit (J$68,000) and the room repair kit (J$115,000).

Through this effort, Miller Bennett says she aims to make the rebuilding process more accessible and transparent, ensuring that support reaches directly into the hands of those who need it most.

The first-time MP emphasised the urgency of the recovery process, stating that, “Our people are hurting. Many families in Hanover Western are sleeping under damaged roofs or have lost parts of their homes completely. This initiative is not just about fixing roofs; it is about restoring dignity and giving families a chance to regain stable living conditions. I am calling on everyone who is able to assist to stand with us. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps a family sleep safely again.”

The initiative welcomes support from individuals locally and abroad.

Interested donors can contact the constituency office at (876) 215 0367 or email [email protected] to coordinate contributions.

MP Miller Bennett added, “This is a time for unity and compassion, especially after Hurricane Melissa and as we look toward the Yuletide season. Together, we can rebuild Hanover Western, one home at a time.”

The workshop aimed to strengthen Jamaica’s preparedness and response systems following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

After-Action Reviews are a standard tool in emergency management, used to assess response efforts, capture lessons learned, and improve coordination, planning, and operational systems for future events. Importantly, aligning the AAR process with the International Health Regulations (IHR) ensures that the evaluation of public health emergencies meets globally recognised standards, strengthening Jamaica’s ability to detect, assess, report, and respond to health threats in a timely and effective manner.

In a statement released Tuesday (March), USCIS said its review of pending workloads and benefit applications revealed that prior screening measures were “wholly inadequate.” According to the agency, many applicants for naturalisation and lawful permanent residence were not sufficiently vetted, creating risks to national security and public safety while undermining the integrity of the immigration system.
