Jimmy Donaldson, more popularly known as ‘MrBeast’, an American YouTuber, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, has recently gained attention for building and giving away 100 homes across Jamaica, El Salvador, Colombia, and Argentina.
MrBeast is well-known for creating high-production videos featuring challenges and giveaways, especially for those in need. His channel has 294 million subscribers and counting.
After a video log went viral of MrBeast building and giving away Twenty-five (25) homes in Jamaica, people on social media have been both singing his praises and chastising him.
Some are of the view that MrBeast is rightfully showing up to the Government of Jamaica, and others are elated at the fact that a Youtuber has seen the need in the country and has attempted to bridge that gap.

On June 30, he posted on X:
“When we help people (curing 1000 blind people, building 100 houses, 100 wells, etc.), people get mad and say I shouldn’t be doing this and governments should. Yes, ideally, a YouTuber isn’t the one fixing these issues, but I’m not just gonna stand by and do nothing.”
The post received 9.4 million views.
MrBeast often faces criticism after holding large giveaways, with some people alleging that he does it for attention. However, the reality is that many people benefit from his generosity.
His videos have a significant impact, whether through indirect influence, the monetary prizes he offers with challenging activities, or the donations he makes to organisations.

On June 30, Prime Minister Andrew Holness posted on his X:
“Over 236 deserving families across Jamaica have received the priceless gift of home ownership through the New Social Housing Programme! We are building homes, community by community, transforming lives one home at a time.”
The post received 90.5 thousand views, with folks either celebrating or bashing the prime minister.
One of the most popular comments on the Prime Minister’s post came from the University of the West Indies lecturer Professor Canute Thompson and read:
“Context requires that you remind Jamaica that you promised to build 315 of these homes per year. In 8 years, you should have built 2,520 or 1,260 in 4 years. Your performance is at best 18 per cent and at worst 9 per cent. Let that be known. This is a poor performance (sic),” to which another commenter responded, “Mine him, send him people for you. him nuh like when people talk facts.”
