Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has been fined $50,000 (£38,000) by the NBA for a gesture made during Friday’s narrow 109-108 loss to the Boston Celtics.

After scoring on a foul, the 31-year-old centre celebrated with a motion the league deemed inappropriate, one he’s been penalised for before.

Embiid later joked online that his move looked similar to the signal referees use for a blocking foul, questioning why he’s the one paying the price.

The reigning MVP missed Sunday’s 129-105 win over the Brooklyn Nets as he continues to recover from knee surgery earlier this year.
