A new documentary about the Reggae Girlz, the Jamaican Women’s national team’s journey to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, is set to release later this month.

Directed by Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton, the documentary titled ‘Reggae Girlz’ revisits a defining moment in the history of Jamaican women’s football. Overcoming all the odds to make it to Australia and New Zealand, before delivering major upsets along the way – going head-to-head with Brazil and France to make it to the Round of 16.

The documentary takes viewers behind the scenes into the team’s off-field struggle, with senior players including team captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw lamenting the Jamaican Football Federation’s “subpar” support – with some players even missing friendlies due to “extreme disorganisation.” 

It sheds light on the role played by the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation and Cedella Marley, the former Global Ambassador of the Jamaica Women’s Football Team, who stepped in to support the side.

Detailing individual story on some players

While also spotlighting the stories of some of the nation’s most celebrated players – Konya Plummer, Trudi Carter, Deneisha Blackwood and Shaw – giving an insight into their journey to the pinnacle of world football.

Accompanying the release is an official soundtrack curated by executive producer, Cedella Marley, drawing inspiration from Bob Marley’s iconic phrase “football is freedom.” 

As the first Caribbean team to qualify for two consecutive World Cups, this documentary will shine a light on how Jamaica, against all odds, went from underdogs to giant-slayers.

‘Reggae Girlz’ will be available to stream exclusively on Jolt from August 27, and will be available to purchase via selected platforms from October 27.
