Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern announced on Wednesday (January 18) that she will be resigning from her current role and her term as prime minister will conclude on February 7, 2023.

“This has been the most fulfilling five and a half years of my life. I’m leaving because with such a privileged comes responsibility. The responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead and when you’re not. I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice. It’s that simple,” she said during a press conference.

She also expressed that, while there will be much discussion surrounding her decision, she is “human, politicians are humans who give all they can until it’s time” to chart another path.

Ardern further noted that she is looking forward to spending more time with her family who has sacrificed the most during her career.

She ascended to the role of prime minister in 2017 at the age of 37.

She was also the world’s youngest leader of government.
