The Dallas Cowboys are moving to strengthen their struggling defence with a new addition from the Green Bay Packers.
Reports on Monday indicate the Cowboys have agreed to acquire Pro Bowl defensive tackle Rashan Gary in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. The move comes after Dallas missed out on star pass rusher Maxx Crosby, who was traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Baltimore Ravens last week.
Gary was the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft after leaving Michigan and has grown into a versatile defender during his time in Green Bay. Over seven seasons, he shifted between defensive end, linebacker and back to the defensive line, gradually carving out a reputation as a reliable pass rusher.
His most successful season came in 2024 when he earned Pro Bowl honours with 7.5 sacks, 47 tackles and a fumble recovery across 17 games. He followed that with another steady campaign in 2025, finishing with 7.5 sacks, 45 tackles and a fumble recovery in 16 appearances.
Gary signed a four-year contract extension with the Packers during the 2023 season and is due $18 million in 2026 and $21 million in 2027.
Dallas is looking for answers on defence after a rough 2025 campaign. The Cowboys finished 7-9-1 in Brian Schottenheimer’s first season as head coach. The unit also lost one of its biggest names before the season began when Micah Parsons was traded to Green Bay. By the end of the year, Dallas ranked last in the league in points allowed and near the bottom in total yards surrendered.
