After a chaotic runway closure at the Sangster International Aiport last Thursday, which left several passengers stranded due to more than 50 flights being cancelled, delayed or diverted, MBJ Airports Limited is advising that flight operations at Montego Bay-based transportation hub are back to normal.
In a statement on Wednesday afternoon (August 16), the airport’s management team said that some airlines are operating extra flights to accommodate passengers who were affected by the disruptions in operations.
“We recommend passengers make contact with their respective airlines for the latest updates on their flights and for any information regarding the changes,” the airport said.
A total of 51 flights were scheduled to depart for the day, however, 31 of the scheduled flights got cancelled and the others diverted to nearby airports.
The total losses from taxes and airline fees are still being calculated.
According to the airport, the closure of the runway was a result of ongoing construction work.
MBJ Airports Limited indicated that the decision to temporarily close the runway was done to prioritise the safety of all operations.
