OpenAI endorsed three US Senate bills to promote safe and equitable policies in developing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) on Tuesday (July 30).

The company says the government has the role of ensuring that AI technology is both safe and accessible to people.

The primary bill, the Future of AI Innovation Act, aims to provide Congressional support for the newly established U.S. AI Safety Institute. This institute is at the forefront of the US government’s initiatives to develop and enforce best practices that mitigate the potential risks associated with AI.

In addition to the Future of AI Innovation Act, the AI company is also supporting the CREATE AI Act and the NSF AI Education Act.

The CREATE AI Act seeks to democratise access to AI research resources to ensure that benefits are widely distributed.

The NSF AI Education Act focuses on bolstering the AI workforce by allocating resources to enhance educational initiatives.

Anna Makanju, OpenAI vice president of global affairs, in a LinkedIn post, said, “These bills focus on different aspects of artificial intelligence, but they share a common vision of maximising AI’s economic and educational benefits while minimising its risks.”
