Air passenger arrivals in Grenada have declined by 72% in 2020 relative to 2019.

According to data from the Grenada Airport Authority, only 126,336 persons arrived in 2020 relative to 447,522 persons in 2019. In 2018, there were more than 500,000 passengers arriving in Grenada.

Similarly, aircraft movement at the Maurice International Airport, declined by more than 50% between 2019 and 2020. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, that figure stood at 12,970 compared to 6,015 in 2020.

The Grenada Tourism Authority is moving to beef up tourist arrivals to the ‘Spice Island’ and thereby boosting passenger arrivals into the country. This is among the primary task of the incoming Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Tourism Authority, Petra Roach, who has just demitted office from the Barbados Tourism Marketing (BTM) Inc.

Roach is taking up the job when Grenada has seen the lowest incoming passengers because of COVID-19 measures.  She has worked at BTM for 26 years, serving in various positions.

Rather than an administrative person, the Board of the Grenada Tourism Authority has opted for a marketer to help drive visitor arrivals to the island, as the tourism industry seeks to recover from the downfall in business caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The workshop aimed to strengthen Jamaica’s preparedness and response systems following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

After-Action Reviews are a standard tool in emergency management, used to assess response efforts, capture lessons learned, and improve coordination, planning, and operational systems for future events. Importantly, aligning the AAR process with the International Health Regulations (IHR) ensures that the evaluation of public health emergencies meets globally recognised standards, strengthening Jamaica’s ability to detect, assess, report, and respond to health threats in a timely and effective manner.

In a statement released Tuesday (March), USCIS said its review of pending workloads and benefit applications revealed that prior screening measures were “wholly inadequate.” According to the agency, many applicants for naturalisation and lawful permanent residence were not sufficiently vetted, creating risks to national security and public safety while undermining the integrity of the immigration system.
