The PNP Patriots, a professional youth arm of the opposition, extended congratulations to former Patriots president Omar Newell on his elevation to chairman of Region 2.

In a statement, the PNP Patriots noted that this achievement is not only a personal milestone but a “celebration of what disciplined and visionary youth leadership can accomplish within the People’s National Party”.

MP Newell’s political journey clearly illustrates growth through service. He first served as president of the Patriots from 2018 to 2021, during which he played a key role in amplifying the voices of young professionals and promoting forward-thinking activism within the party. He successfully won his seat in the September 3 general election, marking the beginning of his career in representational politics as a Member of Parliament.

MP Newell has emerged as a strong and articulate voice. He has provided insightful perspectives on policies impacting working families, rural communities, and national development. His early contributions in Parliament underscore the importance of nurturing a new generation of leaders ready to govern, challenge the status quo, and enrich public discourse. He has earned respect from colleagues across party lines for his preparedness and principled advocacy, both in Parliament and on the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC).

Now elevated to regional chairman, he stands out as the youngest among all regional chairmen. His rise into the PNP’s second-tier leadership demonstrates his record of meaningful contributions and consistent advancement within the movement. This progression embodies the core ideals that the Patriots uphold: leadership through active engagement, accountability through performance, and empowering youth to not only participate but also lead with excellence.

As the chairman of region two, which includes St. Mary, Portland, and St. Thomas, MP Newell now has an expanded mandate to strengthen political organisation, deepen community partnerships, and further align the party’s mission with the everyday struggles and aspirations of the people. His elevation signifies confidence not only in his abilities but also in the future of the Party and the country. This confidence is shown through its investment in capable, visionary youth leaders grounded in service.

Reading Time: 3 minutesThe Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), recently concluded a two-day After-Action Review (AAR) workshop held from March 24–25. The workshop aimed to strengthen Jamaica’s preparedness and response systems following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

After-Action Reviews are a standard tool in emergency management, used to assess response efforts, capture lessons learned, and improve coordination, planning, and operational systems for future events. Importantly, aligning the AAR process with the International Health Regulations (IHR) ensures that the evaluation of public health emergencies meets globally recognised standards, strengthening Jamaica’s ability to detect, assess, report, and respond to health threats in a timely and effective manner.

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a series of strengthened screening and vetting measures aimed at enhancing national security and public safety, particularly for applicants from high-risk countries.

In a statement released Tuesday (March), USCIS said its review of pending workloads and benefit applications revealed that prior screening measures were “wholly inadequate.” According to the agency, many applicants for naturalisation and lawful permanent residence were not sufficiently vetted, creating risks to national security and public safety while undermining the integrity of the immigration system.
