The Portmore-Kingston Causeway was the scene of a tragedy on Sunday when a vehicle accidentally drove off the bridge and into the sea below, resulting in the death of its occupant.

Dead is the 62-year-old Chinese businessman Jing Wang Wang of Hope Avenue in St Andrew.

On June 29th, Wang, accompanied by his friends and family, embarked to the disused Portmore-Kingston Causeway to fish. However, the outing was cut short due to rain.

Wang reportedly rushed into his vehicle and attempted to make a U-Turn when the car plunged into the water. His body and the vehicle were pulled from the water three hours later.

The police said they have repeatedly warned against fishing on the disused bridge, which has been replaced by the larger Highway 2,000 crossing.

Sergeant Canute Nairne expressed his disappointment at the lack of caution displayed by those who fish on the bridge and said it should be closed to public access.

“They are fishing on the bridge; they’re not wearing any vests…they don’t do anything to protect themselves—more than throw the rocks, and sometimes fish pull them in the water,” he commented. “It is a danger to persons who want to fish, “We have dragged many bodies that have floated [to this area] because of mishaps during fishing. So please, I am begging persons to be cautious.”
