Greater Miami and Miami Beach once again reaffirm their global leadership as the cruise capital of the world with a series of milestone achievements reinforcing this position and driving significant economic impact for the South Florida region.
In February, the port handled a record 10 cruise ships and nearly 68,000 passengers in a single day, establishing a new benchmark for cruise ports globally. This surge in traffic highlights Miami’s growing dominance in the increasingly competitive cruise industry market.
The port’s expansion continued this month with two major launches. MSC Cruises debuted its MSC World America on April 9, sailing from the newly completed $490 million terminal, now the world’s largest cruise facility at 490,000 square feet. Just days later, Norwegian Cruise Line introduced its Aqua vessel, the first ship in its Prima Plus class, on April 13.
These milestones coincide with Seatrade Cruise Global, the world’s largest cruise industry convention, which celebrated its 40th anniversary at the Miami Beach Convention Centre. The event attracted more than 11,500 attendees from over 128 countries around the world, gathered in Miami, the birthplace of the global cruise industry. With over 600 exhibitors and thousands of cruise industry leaders, the event further reinforced Miami’s position at the forefront of global cruising.
“There is truly no place in the world like Greater Miami and Miami Beach when it comes to cruising,” said David Whitaker, President & CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. “With the opening of the world’s largest terminal, record passenger volume, and the honour of hosting Seatrade Cruise Global, our destination is not just participating in the cruise industry—we’re leading it.
Miami’s strategic advantages include proximity to Caribbean destinations and substantial infrastructure investments. The port recently became the first major cruise terminal on the United States eastern seaboard to implement shore power capabilities. This cutting-edge system allows cruise ships to plug into the local electrical grid rather than running their engines, cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality in surrounding communities. The $125 million investment underscores Miami-Dade County’s commitment to environmental stewardship and positions PortMiami as a global leader in sustainable cruising practices. The shore power program supports up to five cruise berths and is a key component of the county’s broader climate resilience strategy.
PortMiami currently handles 8.2 million passengers annually and is the preferred departure point for top cruise lines including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC Cruises, and Virgin Voyages. PortMiami offers diverse itineraries and world-class ships for a variety of options – from family cruises to weekend getaways and luxury cruise vacations.
Factors driving PortMiami’s competitiveness include its superior accessibility as a result of its strategic location 8 miles from Miami International Airport, recently established connection to Brightline high-speed rail service, and proximity to Miami Beach with a direct drive via the MacArthur Causeway enabling passengers to reach Miami Beach’s offers of hotels, world-class beaches and iconic attractions in just 10-15 minutes.
Other advantages that have helped Miami maintain its market position despite increased competition from ports in Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, and international locations are Miami’s developed hospitality infrastructure supporting pre- and post-cruise stays and PortMiami being the first seaport to host a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry Enrollment Center, allowing for expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travellers upon arrival in the United States.
Whether sailing on the latest innovative cruise ships, discovering things to do in Miami before your cruise, or experiencing the vibrant culture of Miami Beach, travellers agree: the best cruise vacation begins in Greater Miami and Miami Beach.
