The Range Rover is regarded as a premium SUV, favoured by royalty and elites across the world.

It is elegant, expensive and in high demand.

Some point to its engineering shortcomings and reliability issues but that hasn’t prevented high sales.

Now owned by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Range Rover has become a favourite among car thieves who target top-end vehicles, sending up its insurance rate in the UK.

According to a recent report, the theft of Range Rovers rose by 47 per cent from 2021 to 22 and that has increased this year.

Some of the higher-end Range Rover (Autobiography) have a waiting list of two years.

Bloomberg reports that six of the 10 most stolen cars in the United Kingdom to March this year were Range Rovers.

This has caused Range Rover insurance premiums to go through the roof thus impacting the value of used-Range Rover car sales.

They are just too expensive to run.

In the UK, used Range Rover prices have fallen by 10 per cent to around £35,200 according to Auto Trader.

Some Range Rover models insurance premiums  could set you back as much as £50,000. Some argue that it would be easier to buy a good performing Toyota SUV for the same price.

Range Rover thieves are employing technological savvy to break into these vehicles. One way is called “relay attacks”, by targeting the key’s signal which is then sent to a transmitter, allowing access to the car.

JLR has a problem with the security of the Range Rover and is doing something about it. It has spent over £12 million on security updates for Range Rover models manufactured between 2018 and 2022.
