In a comeback victory for the ages, Real Madrid today (May 4) booked a spot in the Champions League final, defeating Manchester City to give Liverpool striker Mo Salah the rematch he has been hoping for.
Trailing 1-0 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate, courtesy of a Riyad Mahrez goal in the 73rd minute, Real’s Rodrygo scored a brace in the 90th and one minute into added time. Those stunners, just a minute apart, sent the game into extra time where talisman Karim Benzema put home a penalty that would seal the victory at the Bernabeau.
It will certainly be a painful loss for Pep Guardiola’s City who had been comfortably ahead, with a two-goal cushion, in what looked to be just seconds from the final whistle.
LIVERPOOL WILL HOPE TO REVERSE STORY
As a result, Guardiola’s men lost out on an opportunity to make up for their defeat to Chelsea in last year’s all-England Champions League final.
Liverpool, however, will now hope to reverse the story of their defeat to Real Madrid in the 2018 final where Salah was forced to leave early through injury and then-goalkeeper Loris Karius committed two devasting errors that will live in infamy.
